Recombinant Human Serum Albumin

Selecting the right recombinant human albumin for your application

Albumin is the most abundant protein component of mammalian blood serum and plays a multifactorial role in supporting binding and transport of ions, fatty acids, vitamins, hormones, small-molecule drugs, and toxins, as well as in regulating serum pH, osmotic pressure, and providing antioxidant activity. As such a versatile molecule for supporting cell health and growth, albumin is indispensable for various life sciences applications.

Historically, the least expensive and most abundant source of laboratory-grade albumin has been from the serum of cows (BSA or FBS/FCS). However, the sensitive applications used to investigate, develop, and manufacture advanced biologic therapies require human albumin and a greater degree of purity than can be obtained through purification from complex biological sources.

InVitria offers a suite of recombinant human albumin products, each of which is completely free of animal or human components and produced in a scalable, non-mammalian recombinant expression system. InVitria’s recombinant human albumin products are manufactured according to good manufacturing practices at an ISO9001:2015 certified facility in Kansas, USA and are naturally free of prion agents and pose a much lower risk of contamination with other human or mammalian adventitious agents compared to serum-derived components. Their purity makes them ideal for demanding research and commercial applications.

Here’s how to choose the albumin product that is right for your needs:

  • Cellastim® S rHSA is specifically optimized to enhance cell doubling times, deliver essential lipids, micronutrients, and antioxidants, while reducing oxidative stress in cell culture applications. It is of suitable purity for inclusion in serum-free and chemically defined cell culture media. Cellastim S is lipid-enhanced for excellent, consistent growth and directed differentiation of a wide variety of human cell types, including T-Lymphocytes, HEK293, hybridoma/NS0, CHO, fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, and virus production in VERO/MDCK cell culture.
  • Exbumin® rHSA has passed regulatory approval in the US and Europe as a final-formulation excipient for therapeutic applications. It is one of the few excipients available to improve viral stability for vaccines and gene therapies. Exbumin is also used to maintain tissue viability during cryo-preservation or storage. It also helps to stabilize cells and tissue used in cell therapy and regenerative medicine applications.
  • Optibumin® 20 rHSA is the highest-purity rHSA available on the market. With exceptionally low levels of albumin aggregates and lipids, and an exceptionally high concentration of free-thiol/Cys-34 mercapto-albumin, Optibumin is optimized for the most demanding of applications, including solubilization or bioconjugation of therapeutic entities in order to improve their pharmacokinetics, inclusion in medical devices, and support for in vitro fertilization and cord blood cryopreservation, as well as iPSC and hESC.
  • Optibumin® 25 rHSA is a high-purity, recombinant human albumin formulated at the same 25% concentration as serum-derived HSA, making it ideal for seamless integration into existing workflows. With the highest concentration of free-thiol/Cys-34 mercapto-albumin and exceptionally low levels of albumin aggregates and lipids, Optibumin 25 is optimized for closed-system biomanufacturing, cell therapy processing, and advanced pharmaceutical applications. It supports drug conjugation, pharmacokinetic modulation, tissue preservation, and cryopreservation of cells and biologics. Optibumin 25 is available in 100 mL bags, ensuring sterility and consistency for closed-system workflows in regulated biomanufacturing environments.
